Privacy policy

Short version: this site counts visits so I know which posts people read. It doesn't record your screen, it doesn't run ads, and it doesn't sell anything about you. If you send me a message or sign up for posts, I get what you typed into the form.

Who runs this site

ajoberlender.com is my personal site, run by me, AJ Oberlender, in Miami, Florida. Questions about anything on this page go to aj@ajoberlender.com.

Analytics

Two tools count visits. They work differently.

Umami (everyone)

Umami is cookieless analytics. It records page views, the page you came from, and coarse details like browser, device type and country. It sets no cookies and doesn't identify you across sites. It runs for every visitor, everywhere, and it respects your browser's Do Not Track setting.

Google Analytics (outside Europe only)

Google Analytics 4 is the only thing on the site that sets tracking cookies (_ga and _ga_*). Where it runs depends on where you are:

• In the EU, the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, it never runs. If your location can't be determined, it doesn't run either.
• Everywhere else, it runs by default and you can turn it off with the Analytics opt-outcontrol in the footer of every page.
• Global Privacy Control is honored automatically. If your browser sends it, Google Analytics never loads for you.

Opting out is saved in this browser only. If you switch browsers or clear your site data, you'll need to opt out again. Google's advertising features are switched off, so nothing collected here is used for ad targeting.

To decide whether Google Analytics may load, the site sets one small cookie,aj-geo, holding a region flag (eu or other) and nothing else. It's worked out from the country your connection comes from and lasts 180 days.

What this site doesn't do

• No session recording or heatmaps. Nothing watches your clicks or mouse movements.
• No advertising pixels or retargeting.
• No selling or renting personal information to anyone.

Forms

The contact form asks for your name, email, what's on your mind and a message, plus a phone number if you'd like a call. The newsletter forms ask for your first name, last name and email. Submissions go to Formaloo, the form service I use, and I use them to reply to you or to send you new posts. You can ask me to delete what you sent at any time by emailing me.

Embedded content

A few pages embed content from other services: a YouTube video on the speaking page (using YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode), a testimonials wall from SocialJuice, and a kids' memory game hosted on Taskade. Those services may set their own cookies or collect data under their own privacy policies when you view them.

Stored in your browser

The site saves two small preferences in your browser's local storage: your light or dark theme choice, and your analytics opt-out if you chose one. Neither leaves your device.

Hosting

The site is hosted on Vercel. Like any web host, Vercel processes your IP address and request details to deliver pages and keep the service secure.

Legal basis

Analytics runs on legitimate interests: understanding which pages are useful so I can write more of them. The protections above (no Google Analytics in Europe, a one-click opt-out everywhere else, Global Privacy Control honored) are there so that interest doesn't outweigh yours. Form submissions are processed because you sent them and asked for a reply or for new posts.

Changes

If what the site does changes, this page changes with it, and the date at the top moves.
